Miley Cyrus capped her performance of “Flowers” at February’s Grammy Awards by changing out one of the song’s lyrics for “I just won my first Grammy!” The improvisation felt decidedly joyful for Cyrus and audience members alike, as minutes before, she had indeed just accepted the trophy for best solo pop performance.
Now Cyrus has added another memento of that evening, purchasing the Bob Mackie dress she wore during that performance. Just two days before the design was due to be auctioned during “Hollywood Legends: Unmistakably Mackie,” a sale set for Dec. 11 at Beverly Hills-based Julien’s Auctions, Cyrus has privately purchased it for her personal archive, paying an undisclosed sum, with proceeds donated to MusiCares. Based in Santa Monica, the nonprofit MusiCares Foundation provides health, educational and financial programs and assistance to people working in the music industry.

“This dress represents more than a performance — it’s a celebration of the relationship between music, artistry and glamour,” Cyrus noted in a Julien’s press statement announcing the sale. “This performance was a pivotal moment in my life, and to have Bob Mackie’s support in securing it means the world to me.”
Mackie’s team reportedly worked behind the scenes in collaboration with Julien’s to secure the dress for Cyrus before it arrived on the auction block. “Miley’s performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards marked an unforgettable moment in her career,” Mackie, who originally designed the dress in 2002 for a Broadway-themed collection, said in the same press statement. “As the designer of this dress, I couldn’t imagine it on anyone else. That girl was born to perform!”
One of five looks Cyrus wore that evening, the beaded, fringed dress with bare midriff was chosen by Cyrus’s stylist, Bradley Kenneth, and had carried an auction estimate of $6,000 to $8,000. By mid-November, the look had received an online bid of $4,500. “This collaboration perfectly embodies our mission to honor the legacies of both music and fashion,” added Gabriela Schwartz, managing director at Julien’s Auctions. “It’s a true win for all involved.”
