Jon M. Chu embraced the latest technology when bringing his record-breaking film adaptation to life (now available to buy or rent on the Apple TV app). As one of the first filmmakers to put spatial computing to the test, Chu used Apple Vision Pro while editing and producing parts of Wicked.
Vision Pro, Apple‘s first “spatial computer,” is a mixed-reality headset that blends digital content with the physical world. This means users can interact with the digital in a way that feels like it’s physically present in their space. The three-dimensional interface is controlled by intuitive inputs: the user’s motion and hand gestures, eye tracking and speech recognition.

“For Wicked, we had a lot of visual effects all around the world,” says Chu. “I could be at my house, and I could have a screen that was bigger than the one we had in the screening room, and I could be talking to all the people in all the different continents, and I would watch the playback.”
He would then zoom in and “draw” on the screen using his finger to point out potential edits. “Like, ‘hey, this ear looks weird on the goat’ … It just adds new dimension to how you see things,” Chu explains.
Viewers can take part in the interactive magic too. Wicked, available to buy or rent on the Apple TV app, can be experienced in 3D like never before using Apple Vision Pro.
